Ursula Schmitz



Ursula Schmitz ("Dr Ursula") was a German gynaecologist who served women in a lawless North West Frontier Province of Pakistan for 23 years. While serving at the Christian Missionary Hospital in Tank, she remained steadfast despite the presence of Taliban militants and was a role model for the staff of the hospital that was located adjacent to the militancy infested South Waziristan Agency (administrative area).

She was very popular among the illiterate women who consulted her for every health issue they faced. She was always helpful to the women who sought her help, many of whom visited her from remoter areas.

She died on 11 August 2009 from suspected malaria. Only 72 hours later, the Pakistan government honoured her with their highest civil award in recognition of her services in the area of health.
